A long-discussed metro corridor connecting Terminal 1 (T1) of Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) with Aerocity, creating a seamless link with Terminal 3 (T3), is nearing approval, citing officials aware of the matter, the Hindustan Times reported.
Authorities have finalised the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the extension.
Once operational, international passengers landing at T3 will be able to use the Airport Express Line, get off at Aerocity, and switch to the Golden Line for direct access to T1.
“The DPR has been finalised to integrate T1 with the upcoming Golden Line, allowing international passengers arriving at T3 to connect to their domestic flights at T1 via Aerocity within ten minutes,” an official was quoted as saying by HT.
Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL) had first put forward the proposal in 2023, after which the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) carried out a study and submitted DPR.
While the plan stalled earlier, officials confirmed that both agencies have now finalised a version that has been cleared by the Delhi government and is awaiting Union Cabinet approval.
Work is expected to begin once the Cabinet gives its nod, with completion targeted for 2027.
The move aligns with the government’s broader vision to position Delhi as an international aviation hub within two years.
DIAL’s chief executive recently noted that while airport facilities are expanding, inter-terminal connectivity between T1 and T3 remains a weak point.
At present, T3 is linked to the Airport Express Line, while T1 connects to the Magenta Line, with no direct transfer between the two.
Currently, travellers use a complimentary shuttle service along with taxis and app-based cabs to move between terminals.
A separate Automated People Mover (APM) has also been planned, though it is still at the bidding stage.
