Inaugurating the celebrations on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Kolkata Port Trust (KoPT), Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi announced that the renowned port would now be known as Syama Prasad Mukherjee Port, reports The Times of India.
Announcing the renaming of KoPT after Mukherjee, PM Modi hailed him as a legendary leader who stood for development and fought for the idea of One Nation, One Constitution from the forefront.
PM Modi also lauded the port which he said represented the industrial, spiritual, and self-sufficiency aspirations on India. He also underscored the responsibility to make the port into a powerful symbol of New India.
PM Modi also recalled the role played by Bharatiya Jan Sangh founder Mukherjee in setting the stone for industrialisation in India and his active participation in the establishment of Chittaranjan Locomotive Factory, Hindustan Aircraft Factory and Damodar Valley Corporation.
