The Central Railway Zone is planning to introduce free in-train entertainment services for its suburban local trains by July, Financial Express has reported.
Under this service, the commuters can access pre-loaded movies, music and videos on a railway server by connecting to a hotspot. This content can be accessed by downloading a smartphone app.
Currently the app is being developed and the service is under the testing phase at the Kurla railway carshed. As per Senior Public Relations Officer Central Railways Anil Kumar Jain, the Indian Railways is considering its introduction in July of this year. Railways would also float a tender to facilitate its implementation.
With the service being free, Railways is planning to generate revenue via advertisement which will come under its non-fare category.
This entertainment service seems to be the next phase of Indian Railways’ digital push which till now has seen the introduction of a free WiFi service at 832 railway stations. The WiFi connectivity has been planned at a total of 6,441 railway stations in India.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
