Chandigarh Municipal Corporation Elections: BJP Outstrips Congress With Lead On 17 Seats Out Of 26

Results for Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections, polling for which took place on 18 December are being announced today. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is leading the race with a lead on 17 seats, while Congress is leading on 4 seats out of 26.

The election to 26 wards of the Municipal Corporation was a litmus test for BJP and Congress post demonetisation. Therefore, the clear mandate given by voters to BJP can be seen as a stamp of approval.

BJP, at present, has 15 councillors. Congress has nine councillors, BSP has one, and one is Independent.

Both Congress and BJP contested all 26 wards, while BSP has candidates in 17 wards. The Municipal Corporation has 36 members, of which 26 are elected councillors, nine are nominated councillors and one is an MP.
