Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has ordered removal of Surajpur Collector Ranbir Sharma after a video of him went viral on social media in which he can be seen slapping a youth for violating lockdown rules.

The incident was followed by an uproar on social media platform with netizens demanding action against the DM.

Condemning the act, Baghel said that he got to know about the incident through social media.

"Such conduct is not acceptable in the official life of any officer. I am upset with this incident. I apologize to the young man and his family," Baghel said in his tweet. R

In the video, the boy can be seen showing a piece of paper and something on his mobile phone to the Collector who takes the device and throws it to the ground and slapped the boy.

However, the Collector had apologised for slapping the boy and throwing his phone for violating the Covid-19 lockdown norms later on Saturday.

The IAS Association also condemned the act. "The IAS Association also strongly condemns the behaviour of Collector Surajpur, Chhattisgarh. It is unacceptable & against the basic tenets of service & civility. Civil servants must have empathy & provide a healing touch to society at all times, more so in these difficult times," it tweeted.

According to the reports, Gaurav Kumar Singh has been appointed the new Collector of Surajpur.
