GE Power India Ltd earlier today announced that they have been awarded four contracts that is worth Rs 1,783 crore from NTPC to supply the required equipments for the coal power plants in India, Economic Times has reported.

For NTPC’s projects in Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh, Wet Flue Gas Desulphurisation (Wet FGD) is required. It is aimed at reducing pollution and generating clean power from the existing coal plants in India.

“The six Wet FGDs together will treat more than 42 million cubic meters per hour of flue gas and will remove more than 540,000 tons of Sulphur dioxide each year which will be converted into gypsum by-product for use in the construction industry,” GE said in relation to the newly awarded projects.

Sulphur dioxide is a pollutant which can cause respiratory problems as well as cardiovascular diseases.

Wet FGD is being done because of the new emission standards that has been set by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC).

In a notification issued, the ministry has asked all the thermal power plants in India to have the facility of FGD technology installed in its plants in order to tackle the Sulphur dioxide emissions. It is said that GE will finish installing the Wet FGDs in the next 33 months for the first unit. The second unit will take about 39 months.
