On Monday (17 December), the Senate of Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT K) decided to terminate 135 students from the Institute for poor academic performance, reports Times Of India.
The administration said that the decision to terminate is temporary and final decision will be taken in the next senate meeting on 31 December.
The deputy director of IIT Kanpur Manindra Agarwal said, “135 students have been terminated for failing to perform well in academics. It is temporary. These students will get a chance to appeal for reinstatement. Those who failed to do well even in the past and have a poor track record will be terminated permanently. Others would be reinstated.”
The students can appeal against the termination in a week, and the appeal would be heard during the next senate meeting and then the final decision would be taken.
“Many a time students are unable to perform well due to sickness or other unavoidable reasons. Such students have a good track record otherwise so usually they get a chance to study again in their respective courses” Professor Agarwal said.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
