ESPNcricinfo has collaborated with IIT Madras to launch “Superstats”, which has been described as a next generation artificial intelligence (AI) tool to analyse cricket statistics, Times of India has reported.
The AI tool powered by machine learning and forecasts can determine in real-time if a player’s performance can turnaround a game. Some of the factors involved in the analysis are stats metrics like luck index, forecaster and small stats, these work with the help of data science to provide a context to each and every game.
Apart from forecasting a players performance in real time, the app also reveals trends and patterns during the game based on the match data being fed to the tool.
The development has been spearheaded by IIT Madras research scholars Raghunathan Rengaswamy, Mahesh Panchagnula along with the ESPN team.
Rengaswamy was quoted was quoted as saying that, “While there might be many interpretations for luck, these algorithms rationalise and consistently quantify luck events so that a whole tournament with matches that occurred in disparate circumstances could be compared in an ‘apples-to-apples’ fashion”.
IIT Madras has also been applying AI in other verticals like manufacturing, smart city, fintech, health care and biotech systems engineering.
