Ishrat Jahan, one of the five petitioners in the triple talaq case, has joined the Bharatiya Janata Party, the West Bengal unit general secretary Sayantan Basu said yesterday (31 December).
“Ishrat Jahan joined the BJP at our Howrah office yesterday,” Basu told reporters.
Jahan was felicitated by the party's Howrah unit on Saturday (30 December) and then inducted into the party. A state-level programme to felicitate her is to be organised according to Basu.
Jahan's husband had divorced her over the phone in 2014 by uttering ‘talaq’ thrice from Dubai. Later on, in August 2017, her two children were kidnapped, which Jahan alleged was done at the behest of her husband.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
