Sydney based aviation research body Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) has said that Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport in Delhi could overtake London’s Heathrow airport in terms of traffic, The Hindu BusinessLine has reported. IGI’s traffic is expected to grow from 65.7 million in 2017-18 to 80 million in 2019-20.
“India’s largest airport, Delhi, which handled 65.7 million passengers in FY2018, is likely to cross 80 million passengers in FY2020, which would see it approach or even overtake London Heathrow in traffic volumes,” the report said.
IGI handles over 1,200 flights per day. Airports Council International had declared that IGI was the best airport in the category of those which handle more than 40 million passengers. Further, the CAPA report added that the volume of passengers handled by Indian airports grew annually at the rate of 16.5 per cent.
During the first quarter of the year, Indian airports had seen a growth of 17.1 per cent and the trend is expected to continue as per CAPA. “That would mean that India’s airport system will handle 50 million incremental passengers this year, which is more than all of India’s airports handled in total in the financial year 2004,” the report said.
