A sessions court in Delhi today (Thursday, 21 February 2019) began the hearing of the Sunanda Pushkar death case. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, Pushkar’s husband at the time of her death, was also present for the hearing, reports Hindustan Times.
Tharoor is charged with abetting her suicide, a punishable offence under Section 306 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). He also faces the charge of spousal cruelty under section 498-A of the IPC.
Sunanda Pushkar was found dead in a suite of a luxury hotel in Delhi in January, 2014. Pushkar and Tharoor were staying there as latter’s official bungalow was being renovated at that time.
The court adjourned the matter till 2 pm today when the hearing will re-commence. As of now, the police have requested the grant of 10 days from the court to prepare arguments on charges faced by Tharoor.
On the other hand, Tharoor’s lawyer Vikas Pahwa informed the court of a revision petition filed by them alleging non-compliance of section 207 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) citing discrepancies in the documents made available to them by the prosecution.
