The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has finally found a solution to ensure discounts on Metro travel for a select category of passengers. This will soon be implemented across the entire metro network in the National Capital Region (NCR). However, it is not clear how much fare concession will be provided among the two categories: students and senior citizens.

“DMRC is exploring the possibility of biometric AFC gate systems, which may help them in future for developing multiple benefits for both passengers as well as the system for passenger identification, profiling, concessions, etc.,” said Executive Director, Corporate Communications, DMRC, Anuj Dayal, reported Times of India.

Currently, the passengers use single-journey tokens or travel smart cards that can be used for multiple journeys which can be transferred and cannot be used to provide concession to a passenger.

However, in the upcoming fare collection system, it will now be possible to issue smart cards to people with their biometric data stored in the card, ensuring that no one else, but only the cardholder uses it.
