The Ministry of Finance has said that generating e-way bills would be mandatory for local transportation of goods in the states of Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Kerala, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana from 15 Apil, reports Mint. Karnataka had implemented it for local shipments from 1 April when e-way bills were mandated for interstate shipments nation-wide.

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) council wants to have a common electronic permit for all shipments in the country valued at Rs 5,000 and above that is being transported for 50 km or more. The council expects all states to be on board by 1 June this year.

A statement from the ministry said that more than six million e-way bills were generated till 9 April.

With the roll-out of e-way bill system in these States, it is expected that trade and industry will be further facilitated insofar as the transport of goods is concerned, eventually paving the way for a nation-wide single e-Way Bill system.

The e-way bill system is an anti-evasion feature of the GST regime that came into effect on 1 July last year. It requires businesses to register on a portal to generate the document to prevent manipulation of the value of goods being transported. Policy makers are hopeful that the system will help integrate cash-driven informal transactions into a formal economy and boost GST revenues that have been stagnating for the last three months.
