In a daring jailbreak, armed men today (27 November) raided the high-security Nabha jail in Punjab, helping two terrorists and four gangsters escape, police said.
A massive search operation has been launched to nab the prisoners.
The terrorists who escaped at around 9.30 AM were Khalistan Liberation Force chief Harminder Singh Mintoo, and gangsters, Vicky Gonder, Gurpreet Sekhon, Neeta Deol and Vikramjit.
The 10 to 12 armed attackers dressed in police uniforms entered the jail premises in two cars, including a Toyota Fortuner SUV. They breached the tight security of the jail with at least 100 rounds fired during the attack, which took place when the prisoners were brought out of their barracks for morning chores, jail sources said.
Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, also the Home Minister, called an emergency meeting of top police officers to take stock of the situation.
The incident has taken place just two months before assembly elections in Punjab and is seen as a major security breach and intelligence failure.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
