The contract for design and building of a part of the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link has been secured by Tata Projects Limited, in a joint venture with South Korea’s Daewoo E&C, for $850 million (Rs 5,612 crore), reported the Hindu Business Line.
The Tata joint venture was awarded one sea package, as per the conditions provided in the tender, despite emerging as the lowest bidder in two.
As part of the package, a 7.8km-long bridge section will be built across the Mumbai bay, including an interchange at Shivaji Nagar, Navi Mumbai.
Earlier in November, it came to light that Larsen & Toubro had bagged an order worth Rs 8,650 crore for the construction of two sea packages of the Link, reported Business Standard. While one is a section on the Sewri side of the sea bridge, the other, sea package three, involves the section of the bridge on land towards Chirle.
As per 2013 estimates by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority, 62,000 passenger car units will be expected to ply on the bridge every day, which will rise to around 2 lakh vehicles a day over 30 years of operation, assuming the Navi Mumbai International Airport will have become operational, as reported in an Indian Express report.
In addition to the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link, Mumbai’s coastal road project is set to kick off in April next year. The 29.2km stretch – connecting South Mumbai to the suburbs – will provide an impetus to Mumbai’s western corridor and allowing for the rising daily vehicular traffic. The project will have as many as eight lanes with two dedicated bus lanes.
