If all goes according to plan, Malayalam actor Mohanlal could be the Bharatiya Janata Party Lok Sabha candidate for Thiruvananthapuram in 2019, reports Deccan Herald. As per the report, this inclusion is being pushed by the RSS.

However, sources in the Sangh said that they do not want the actor ‘para dropped’ into politics, without sufficient groundwork. Towards ensuring he gets a ‘real’ political image, a team is working on building his ‘social activist’ profile.

Rumours have been around for quite some time now over whether the 58-year-old national award-winning actor would enter the political fray, and on a BJP ticket. Serious discussions have been on in the Sangh Parivar on fielding Mohanlal against current MP Shashi Tharoor in the constituency in 2019. They feel the move could yield rich dividends for the party. However, Mohanlal, has not commented on the matter. In 2014, the BJP fielded O Rajagopal as its Lok Sabha candidate.

The RSS kept the state unit of the party out of the loop on the matter, as evidenced by BJP leaders’ ignorance over the discussions around Mohanlal. The issue has come alive once again in the aftermath of the actor meeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to invite him for a function at Wayanad.

Sources, however, said that no political discussions were held during the meeting with the PM, and that it was only a courtesy visit, in an effort to build the socio-political image of the actor.

Mohanlal has an NGO called the Vishwashanti Foundation, named after his father Vishwanathan Nair and mother Shantakumari. The foundation is planning to unveil some major social welfare projects including a Cancer institute in Wayanad.
