In a major fillip for the already growing adoption of electronic toll collection across the nation, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has now decided to mandate the use of FASTags for all the four-wheelers across the nation from 1 January onwards, Economic Times.
The MoRTH had issued a notification for the same yesterday (7 November). Before this, the Ministry had mandated FASTags for the registration of all new four-wheeler vehicles supplied by the manufacturers and their dealers. This had come into effect on 1 December 2017 itself.
Meanwhile, to boost compliance and adoption of FASTags, the Ministry has also mandated FASTags for getting third party insurance from 1 April 2021 onward. It has also been mandated that the renewal of fitness certificate will be done only after the fitment of FASTag for the transport vehicles.
The move comes, as the Government is aiming to ensure seamless movement of vehicles through the toll plazas by building on the progress achieved under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme under which FASTags operate.
