Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Monday (1 October) said that the states have been asked to collect biometrics of illegal Rohingya immigrants to deport them, Times of India has reported.

"States have been told to identify them (Rohingya). They have to take their biometrics also. After that, they will send a report to the Centre. Then the central government will initiate action through diplomatic channels with Myanmar and then we will get it resolved," Rajnath Singh told reporters.

Singh spoke in sync with the affidavit the Home Ministry had submitted in the Supreme Court on the Rohingyas, ruling out chances of giving them refugee status.

Rajnath Singh was in Kolkata to chair the 23rd meeting of Eastern Zonal Council, which was attended by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das and Bihar Deputy CM Sushil Modi.

The statement came a day after the Railway Protection Police (RPF) alerted authorities in Kerala to watch out for movement of a large number of refugees. The RPF had sent a list of 14 trains which the Rohingya groups could possibly take to reach Kerala from northeastern states.
