On Tuesday (8 November 2016), a simpler portal for the incoming Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime went live. The new portal will enable easy filing of returns and tax payments through credit or debit cards as well as other modes.
Close to 60 per cent of the software needed to run GST is ready. The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), which is the company building the infrastructure, made the www.gst.gov.in portal live for migrating existing taxpayers.
The new portal will aid businessmen and traders who currently have to file separate returns for array of indirect taxes to file a single monthly return and pay tax online through various payment cards. The new registrations under GST will begin from April 2017.
Four data centres spread across Delhi and Bengaluru will be built by the GSTN to ensure that the data is secure and to warrant data recovery, whenever called for. GSTN chairman Navin Kumar said that by December all equipment would be ready and testing would start.
About 80 lakh taxpayers will be migrated from the existing to GST regime. That migration we are starting now. We will generate a PAN-based provisional ID for each taxpayer. By December, all the hardware equipment will be ready. Then, the software will be put on the data centre and then the testing will start.
