Following the approval of the Election Commission (EC), the Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry will be forwarding its shortlist of candidates for the position of vice-chancellor at three universities to the President Ram Nath Kovind, reports The Indian Express.
The three universities are Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) in Delhi, Mahatma Gandhi Central University in Motihari and Mahatma Gandhi Antarrashtriya Hindi Vishwavidyalaya in Wardha.
Generally, the government is discouraged from taking appointment decisions prior to the elections when the Model Code of Conduct is in force. Therefore, a ministry needs the EC’s green-light to make such a move.
The HRD Ministry had contended that the shortlisting process itself had been over before the Model Code of Conduct came into effect.
There are a total of thirteen names on the list sent to the president, out of which three are candidates for JMI, five for the central university in Motihari, and another five names for the university at Wardha.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
