Elon Musk, chief of US electric vehicle major Tesla has said that import duties on the company’s vehicles in India will likely make the car unaffordable in India.
Musk tweeted out the response on being asked when the company’s plans to enter the Indian market. Musk had earlier in March said that the Tesla could look at entering the Indian car market by this year or the next year definitely.
Iâm told import duties are extremely high (up to 100%), even for electric cars. This would make our cars unaffordable.

Musk frequently engages with his followers on Twitter and has talked about his plans for India earlier too. He further tweeted out the company’s modus operandi for entering new markets.
For other countries, we pay in part for the local factory by selling cars there ahead of time. Also, gives a sense of demand. Current rules in India prevent that, but recent changes in sales tax give hope for future changes.

Earlier, India’s Make in India initiative too had engaged with Musk on Twitter to clarify Indian policy on FDI and local sourcing.

Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
