In its latest diktat, the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal has transferred two teachers for allegedly participating in “anti-government activities” and “trying to stir up unrest”, The Indian Express has reported.
The teachers, posted in the hills, were transferred after the district administration wrote to the school education department.
District Magistrate said many government officials in the hills are “involved in acts unbecoming of government employees and stirring up locals”.
There are government servants in different departments, including teachers, who have stayed back in Darjeeling for years without transfers. A section of such officials neglect duty and services, and welfare schemes do not reach the people. Moreover, it has been found that they have been involved in acts unbecoming of government employees and stirring up locals,” she said.
She added that six to seven “such people” have been transferred in one year.
Political parties in the hills, including the Gorkha National Liberation Front, are protesting against the government’s move. One of the teachers who has been transferred is planning to knock on the court’s door.
Earlier this year, the government had introduced a plan to prevent teachers in service from criticising it and its decisions in public forum, including the media.
