In an alarming development, India's count of daily COVID-19 cases scaled to an all-time peak, surpassing 1.01 lakh cases yesterday (4 April), reports Indian Express.

Of the total fresh cases reported yesterday, Maharashtra alone reported 57,074 new cases. Pune and Mumbai, two of the worst-affected cities reported 12,472 and 11,206 new cases yesterday, respectively.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that no other State and city reported more than 12,000 and 8,500 cases yesterday, respectively.

With the addition of yesterday's cases, at least 1.25 crore people in India have so far been found to have contracted the coronavirus. The present count of active cases stands at more than seven lakh, of which over 4.3 lakh is in Maharashtra alone.

It should also be noted that of the 490 COVID-19 deaths reported yesterday, as many as 235 were reported in Maharashtra alone.

Given the alarming surge in cases in the nation, Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi yesterday held a high-level review meeting. During the meeting, PM Modi was informed that over the last 14 days, Maharastra has accounted for about 57 per cent of the total number of COVID-19 cases and about 47 per cent of deaths.
