The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with the United States government for procurement of MK 54 Torpedo and expendables such as chaff and flares for the Indian Navy at a cost of Rs 423 crore.
These weapons are the outfit of P-8I Aircraft which is used for Long range Maritime Surveillance, Anti-Submarine Warfare and Anti-Surface Warfare (ASV), the Ministry of Defence said in a statement on Friday (22 October).
The Indian Navy has a total of 11 P-8I aircraft, which are manufactured by US aerospace company Boeing, in its fleet.
In addition to anti-submarine warfare capabilities, the P-8I aircraft is known for its advance maritime reconnaissance capabilities, reports Indian Express.
The contract was signed on Thursday (21 October) under the foreign military sale (FMS) programme of the US government.
The FMS is the US government's programme for transferring defence articles, services, and training to its international partners and international organisations designated by the US President.
Under FMS, the US government uses its department of defence’s acquisition system to procure defense articles and services on behalf of its partners. Eligible countries may purchase defense articles and services with their own funds or with funds provided through US government-sponsored assistance programmes. In certain cases, defense articles may be obtained through grants or leases.
