The squadron based out of the Chandigarh air base is also equipped with Russian made Mil Mi-26 helicopters.
These Boeing manufactured Chinook helicopters would be be used for military transportation of troops and materials including fuel and heavy equipment to border areas.
In total India has signed a $3 billion deal with US manufacturer Boeing for the purchase of 15 CH-47F Chinook transport and 22 Apache AH-64E attack helicopters.
This mega defence deal also has a Make-In-India touch to it as Boeing has included 160 Indian firms in its supply chain including a joint venture for manufacturing Apache’s fuselage.
The first of 22 AH-64E Apache twin-turboshaft attack helicopters would be delivered to the Indian Air Force by July.
