In a significant development, India for the first time in 227 days recorded lesser than 200 COVID-19 deaths yesterday (10 January), reports Times of India.

Yesterday, India recorded a total of 167 deaths. Before this, the last time India had recorded a death tally of lesser than 200 was on 28 May. Furthermore, yesterday's fatality count is the lowest since 25 May's 151 tally. Also, in the past seven days, weekly fatalities have declined by 14 per cent.

In addition to this, just 16,513 new COVID-19 cases were reported yesterday which is much lower than the tally reported on the three days before that when on each day more than 18,000 new cases were reported. Also, the emergence of new COVID-19 cases in the country has been on a declining path for the ninth week in a row now.

The week from 4-10 January saw the emergence of 1,26,043 new cases across the nation. This was five per cent lower than the tally reported in the week before that by a difference of about 6,700 cases. This builds on the 13 per cent decline recorded in the week from 28 December-3 January compared to the week before that.
