In the ‘Swachh Iconic Places’ list released by the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation, on Tuesday (3 September), the Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Jammu and Kashmir has grabbed the top spot.
The Shrine which remained second, behind the Golden Temple in 2017 and received a special award that year, was adjudged as the Best Swachh Iconic place in the country this year.
Water kiosks, reverse vending machines, equid dung management centre, installation of kill waste machine, collection, transportation, and disposal of waste along with regular mopping up of waste though a workforce of 1300 sanitation workers (Shrine cadre and outsourced) have enabled the shrine to achieve the top rank.
Governor of Jammu and Kashmir and chairman of the shrine board, Satya Pal Malik congratulated the CEO and all employees of the Board, particularly those working for sanitation over the recognition.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
