Two terrorists were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jammu and Kashmir's Shopian district on Saturday (25 December), police said.

The security forces launched a cordon-and-search operation in the Chowgam area of Shopian, in south Kashmir, after inputs were received about the presence of terrorists there, a police official said.

He said the search operation turned into an encounter when the terrorists opened fire on the security personnel, who retaliated.

Two terrorists were killed in the ensuing gunfight, the official said, adding that their identities and group affiliation are being ascertained.

The security forces recovered "incriminating materials" including arms and ammunition from the encounter site.

The identity and group affiliation of the slain terrorists are yet to be ascertained.

The search operation is going on, the police said.

Earlier on Friday (24 December), a terrorist was killed in an encounter with security forces at Mumanhal village of the Arwani area in Anantnag district.

Earlier on Thursday (23 December), acting on specific inputs, the J&K police along with Indian Army's Rashtriya Rifles and CRPF found an IED of around 5 kg assembled in a container planted on Newa Srinagar road.

The bomb disposal squad of J&K police and Army destroyed the IED on the spot and averted a major tragedy.
