The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) report on the exodus from Kairana town in western Uttar Pradesh upholds the claim made by BJP MP Hukum Singh that Hindu families had fled the town due to a surge in crimes by members of a minority community. When Singh made the claim in June, he was ridiculed by large sections of the media, the Samajwadi Party, the Congress and some other political parties. Singh was accused of spreading lies and whipping up communal passions.
An NHRC team that probed the allegation has now found the allegations to be true. The NHRC report is a damning indictment of the local district administration and the Samajwadi Party government in UP for condoning crime. The NHRC probe has revealed that 250 Hindu families had migrated to even faraway places in Gujarat to escape atrocities by members of a minority community whose numbers had swelled after the 2013 Muzaffarnagar riots.
