In a major push for the aviation sector in Karnataka, Chief Minister (CM) BS Yediyurappa on Monday (15 June) laid the foundation stone for an airport at Shivamogga, reports Hindu Businessline.
It should be noted that the airport will be built on a total of 622 acres of land in two phases in a year at a cost of Rs 220 crore. The site for the airport is about 12km from Shivamogga.
In the first phase, the runway, taxiway, apron, approach road, peripheral road and compound wall of the airport will be constructed. Meanwhile, the second phase would witness the construction of the terminal building, air traffic control (ATC) tower and other key infrastructure.
It should be noted that Shivamogga is the home district of CM Yediyurappa. The foundation of the airport was first laid in 2008 and its planning had begun when CM Yediyurappa had previously been the Deputy CM of the State. However, as per him, the project was shelved by the later governments due to lack of interest.
