The Kerala wing of Shiv Sena has threatened to commit “mass suicide” if women ‘dare enter Sabarimala Temple’. ANI quoted Peringammala Aji, a member of Shiv Sena as saying, “Our women activists will gather near the Pamba river on 17 and 18 October as part of a suicide group. If any young woman tries to enter Sabarimala, our activists will commit suicide.”

The protests have escalated after Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan informed the media that his government will be abiding by the order of the apex court. There has been a hue and cry about filing a review petition on behalf of the government or the Travancore Devaswom Board. The Supreme Court had earlier lifted the ban on women of all age groups entering Sabarimala Temple in a 4-1 judgement, The Indian Express reported.

On 12 October, huge protests erupted outside the residence of Kerala Devaswom Minister Kadakampalli Surendran. Exhibiting outrage against the minister for inaction on the matter, BJP’s youth wing Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha had to endure water cannons from the police as a result of the protests.

Regardless of their efforts to express their opinion, CM Pinarayi Vijayan stuck to his stance that his government will not be initiating efforts to file the review petition.
