Ahead of Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s rally in Mizoram, the state Congress is finding it hard to get rid of the fact that it had an alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party for eight months in an autonomous development council, Deccan Herald has reported.
In April this year, BJP and Congress had formed an alliance in Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC).
Launching a scathing attack, Mizo National Front (MNF) accused Congress of having an understanding with “Hindu BJP” as it had forged an alliance with the saffron party.
The attack came as a rebuttal to Congress’ allegation that MNF and BJP are in a ‘secret understanding’ and would try to form a government through a post-poll alliance.
After a fractured mandate in the elections held for the 20-member CADC, BJP and Congress had come together to form the council. Congress had six members while BJP had five members in the council.
MNF had won eight seats but restrained itself from going in alliance with BJP despite being BJP’s partner in North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
NEDA is an alliance of regional parties of North-East India with BJP to overthrow Congress from power.
However, the alliance between BJP and Congress in CADC came to an end when Congress walked out of the alliance on 29 October as its campaign focused on the tagline that ‘Hindu BJP’ would not be accepted in the Christian-majority Mizoram.
