GVK’s step-down subsidiary Navi Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd has awarded an engineering, procurement and construction contract for the greenfield Navi Mumbai international airport to L&T Construction. The Transportation Infrastructure and Buildings & Factories businesses of L&T Construction will execute the project.
The key development spectrum covers cut and fill works, terminal works including departure and arrival forecourts, airfield development works including a 3,700 metre long south runway, apron systems, taxiway systems, airfield ground lighting and other facilities, landside facilities like roads, multilevel car parking, utilities and support facilities.
The proposed Passenger Terminal Building of the airport designed by the famous Zaha Hadid Architects, will initially be developed to handle a capacity of 10 MPA (million passengers per annum). The project will subsequently be enhanced to handle 20 MPA.
Founder and Chairman of GVK Dr GVK Reddy said, “With the commissioning of the iconic Terminal 2 at Mumbai airport and designing the under construction Garden Terminal 2 at Bengaluru airport, GVK had set new benchmarks in the Indian airports sector. Now for the Navi Mumbai International Airport, we have to raise the bar over and above what we have achieved at Mumbai and Bengaluru airports”.
Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director, L&T S N Subrahmanyan said, "With its burgeoning demand, Mumbai city was in dire need of a second airport and we are happy that we have bagged the mandate to build the Navi Mumbai airport".
Land acquisition for the entire 1,160 hectares of the core airport area has been completed by the state government (of Maharashtra) for handing over to M/s NMIAL (Navi Mumbai International Airport Limited).
The Navi Mumbai airport, a much-delayed project, was first proposed in 1997 as a secondary airport to support the busy Mumbai airport.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has been aggressively pushing for Navi Mumbai airport to become operational by mid-2020.
