A Muslim girl studying fifth standard at a Madarasa in Kerala has been expelled because she sported sandalwood paste on her forehead.
Ummer Malayil, the girl Henna’s father, wrote on Facebook that his daughter had sported the paste to act in a short film and the Madarasa punished the student by expelling the her.
Malayil, unrattled by the development, wrote that his daughter was lucky to get away from stone-pelting punishment. Henna is an all-rounder, doing well in her studies and winning prizes in art festivals. The girl stood first in her class in studies and was fifth in the Madarasa public examination.
Malayil’s reaction has come in for praise by the social media with most of them lauding his boldness, while nearly 2,800 have shared the post.
Madarasas in Kerala are courting controversies in the last couple of years with allegations of abuse, promoting Wahabism and intolerance being made against them.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
