The Bihar mahagathbandhan, which temporarily halted Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) victory march following the 2014 landslide in Lok Sabha polls, seems to be falling apart.
The gulf between Bihar's ruling allies Janata Dal United (JDU) and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) widened with the former deciding not to participate in RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav’s 'BJP hatao, desh bachao' rally in Patna on 27 August.
"It's an RJD rally and JDU will not participate in it as a party. If JDU president and Chief Minister Nitish Kumar gets an invite, he will take a call on whether to attend the rally in his individual capacity," said party’s national general secretary Shyam Rajak.
Earlier, despite repeated requests from Lalu Prasad Yadav, JDU backed National Democratic Alliance presidential candidate Ram Nath Kovind and not the Opposition nominee, Meira Kumar. In yet another snub, Nitish Kumar sent his emissary to attend the midnight session in Parliament on goods and services tax rollout, which was boycotted by RJD and Congress.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
