Almost Rs 65,000 crore have been deposited in 30 crore bank accounts opened as a part of the Jan Dhan programme, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in his Mann Ki Baat radio programme on the eve of third anniversary of the scheme.
"We have connected 30 crore new families to it, opened new accounts. This number is more than the population of several countries," Modi said.
“The poor have deposited Rs 65,000 crore in the banks. This is their saving and a source of strength for their future," the Prime Minister added.
He said the poor, with the help of this scheme, have today become part of the mainstream of national economy, and the poor were saving money and feeling the security that comes with it.
The Prime Minister also said that through the Pradhan Mantri Mudra Yojana, youth can take loans from banks, without any guarantee, to stand on their own feet.
"If money stays in hand, there is a desire sometimes to overspend it. Today, there is an atmosphere of restraint. The poor man too feel that money saved will come for the use of his children or in some other good venture."
Modi said that the poor are benefiting from the insurance schemes – Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Yojana and Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana. He also stated that millions of youths had got loans under the Mudra Yojana, which had helped them stand on their own feet and created employment opportunities.
