Coming down heavily on rising cases of Love Jihad, Madhya Pradesh (MP) Chief Minister (CM) Shivraj Singh Chouhan has alleged that a massive cycle of religious conversions is going on in the country under the guise of love, reports Hindustan Times.
Speaking in a no holds barred fashion, Chouhan expressed worry that the condition of such women’s lives has gone from bad to worse making it necessary to stop marriages with wrong motives, done through incentives, pressure, fear and temptation.
Chouhan made the assertions during a personal visit to Prayagraj with his wife Sadhana Singh, who were in the ancient city to immerse the ashes of Chouhan's father-in-law Ghanshyam Das Masani at the Sangam.
Chouhan's assertions against Love Jihad came on a day when Uttar Pradesh (UP)'s Governor Anandiben Patel gave the assent to an ordinance against forcible or fraudulent religious conversions, which provides for imprisonment of up to 10 years and a fine of up to Rs 50,000 under different categories.
It should also be noted that Chouhan is also working to bring in legislation to double the duration of the sentence to 10-years of rigorous imprisonment from a 5-year sentence for cases of forceful religious conversions and marriages by enticement or fraud.
