At least 22 Covid-19 patients died at the Zakir Hussain hospital in Nashik on Wednesday (21 April) after a leak in the oxygen tank stopped ventilators in ICU. A video of the leak has been reported by the media.

As per report, a leakage was reported this afternoon from the oxygen tank during refilling. Even as the hospital and local administration officials took measures to fix the leak, it caused the oxygen supply to be halted for around 30 minutes.

During this time period the condition of Covid-19 patients on oxygen support deteriorated causing 22 deaths so far. The leak was ultimately fixed with the help of the fire department.

"It's an unfortunate incident. As per preliminary info, we've learnt that 11 people died. We're trying to get a detailed report. We've ordered an enquiry as well. Those who are responsible will not be spared", Maharashtra FDA Minister Dr Rajendra Shingane has been quoted as saying.

Maharashtra has been reeling under a scarcity of medical oxygen due to a steep rise in Covid-19 cases. 58,924 new Covid-19 were reported from the state in the last 24 hours.
