More than three years ahead of the term’s expiration, World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim will resign, effective 1 February, reports CNBC.
Kim, a physician and public health advocate, was nominated by former US President Barack Obama for a first and second term. Kim had reportedly pushed financing for green energy projects and mostly dropped support for coal power investment.
“The World Bank Group is more important now than ever, as the aspirations of the poor rise all over the world, and problems like climate change, pandemics, famine and refugees continue to grow in both their scale and complexity,” Kim was quoted from a statement as saying.
However, CNBC has reported that Kim’s was leaving of his own accord and was “not pushed out” by Trump.
Kim will reportedly join a firm to focus on increasing infrastructure investment in developing countries.
Kristalina Georgieva, World Bank’s chief executive officer, will assume the role of interim president when Kim leaves.
Georgieva, a Bulgarian national, has served for 15 years at the World Bank, starting as an environmental economist in 1993.

Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
