Home Minister Rajnath Singh will soon be launching the pilot smart fence project. It includes laser-activated fences which can bridge the gaps along the Pakistan border. The minister will be travelling to Jammu to inaugurate the first-ever smart fence project on 17 September.
Border Security Force (BSF) is carrying out the project. Senior members of the paramilitary forces will be presenting a demonstration and displaying the response mechanism to the minister.
According to Economic Times, Director-General of BSF, K K Sharma, last week said that the project will be carried out across India’s 2,400 kilometre-long border with Pakistan along the western lines. Borders near Bangladesh are also under consideration for the project.
The smart fence project falls under the broader scheme called ‘Comprehensive Integrated Border Management System’ (CIBMS). This move will stop the flow of infiltration and illegal migration to a large extent. The two borders with Pakistan and Bangladesh face the biggest migration and infiltration problems.
The fences will be integrated with tech-based gadgets and a CCTV-like feed will be provided to the BSF post so that an immediate response mechanism can be initiated in case of any intrusion.
