The Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) has successfully completed installation of over one crore LED streetlights covering over 2.7 lakh kms of roads across the length and breadth of India.
The installation of street lights has been achieved under the Union Government's Street Lighting National Programme which was initiated in 2015. The programme had been launched by Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi.
The programme intends to install as many as 1.34 crore LED-powered street lights by March 2020 which would lead to an energy-saving of a massive 9 billion kWh and reduction of 6.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year. Thus, the programme is playing a major role in furthering India's fight against climate change.
The highest number of LED streetlights under the programme has been installed in Andhra Pradesh which alone has cornered a mammoth share of 28.9 lakh streetlights. the southern state has been followed by Rajasthan with 10.3 lakh and Uttar Pradesh (UP) with 9.3 lakh streetlights respectively.
