Early trends from the Election Results for 2019 show Congress making substantial gains in the state of Punjab. Currently, under Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, the Congress party is expected to make significant gains here, ahead of its landslide victory in the state Assembly elections of 2017.

With 13 parliamentary seats up in contention, the Congress is expected to double its tally, at least, from 2014, when it only won three. The majority gain will come at the cost of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which had won four seats in 2014.

Currently, Congress is leading in 10, AAP and SAD-BJP in one each.

AAP, as per the early trends, is leading in a single seat. As per the exit polls, AAP is expected to win from Sangrur, where Bhagwant Mann is representing the party. This is the only projected victory for the AAP in these elections.

Meanwhile, later trends will factor in the performance of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance. The SAD-BJP alliance is expected to win 3-5 seats, including those of Gurdaspur and Bathinda.

In 2009, the Congress had won eight seats in Punjab.
