Ramachandra Guha Quits BCCI Citing Personal Reasons

Ramachandra Guha, eminent historian, who was appointed to the committee of administrators of Bureau of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) by the Supreme Court, resigned today citing ‘personal’ reasons.

As per a report in The Hindu, Guha submitted his resignation letter to Vinod Rai, the chairman of the committee.

The Supreme Court has asked Guha to file the plea in the registry, after which the matter will be taken up by the three-judge bench, headed by Justice Dipak Misra, which had appointed Guha to the Committee.

Guha was appointed for the smooth implementation of the Lodha Committee recommendations on 30 January 2017. The Supreme Court had appointed Rai, the former Comptroller-Auditor General (CAG) to be the chairman of the committee along with cricketer Diana Edulji and Vikram Limaye, chief executive officer of IDFC Ltd.

The Lodha Committee had been appointed by the Supreme Court in 2015 to study the functioning of the BCCI and recommend reforms. The wide-reaching reforms were unveiled on 4 January 2016, which shook the cricket world.

Various state associations and BCCI approached the court against the recommendations, which was rejected by the court.

After the BCCI had dragged its feet on implementing the recommendations, the Supreme Court took the view that the only way to implement the reforms was to remove the current administrators on 2 January 2017, and consequently, the court dismissed Anurag Thakur from the post of president and Ajay Shirke as secretary of BCCI. Post this, the committee, which included Guha, was appointed.
