Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Jio is set to become the first telco to launch the Voice over WiFi (VoWiFi) service, the Telecom Talk reports.
VoWiFi is a packet voice service that is delivered over IP via a WiFi network and wherever possible, seamlessly shift calls over between LTE (mobile network) and WiFi and vice versa.
According to sources the operator is already testing VoWiFi service in various services of Madhya Pradesh, Andra Pradesh, Telangana and Kerala. Various users are also able to see VoWiFi network symbol on the iPhone, indicating the telecom is in the final stages of testing.
While there is no update yet on when Jio would roll-out the service for the public, but with the company testing in important circles, expect the service to be available public within next few months or beginning of 2020.
In the initial stages, the Jio VoWiFi service would be limited to Jio-to-Jio and slowly expand to other networks. In footsteps of Jio, rivals Bharti Airtel and Vodafone are also speeding up their operations to introduce VoWiFi technology.
Reliance Jio had also announced that they would integrate the VoWiFi service onto the JioPhone, which would propel the technology in remote areas of the country.
