Senior Congress leader and incumbent Chief Minister (CM) of Chhattisgarh, Bhupesh Baghel stoked a major controversy on Thursday (3 October) after asserting that freedom fighter Vinayak Damodar Savarkar was involved in Mahatma Gandhi's murder conspiracy, reports Asian News International (ANI).
Speaking to media persons in Raipur, Baghel claimed, "Godse was Savarkar's disciple. This is a historical fact which no one can deny. Savarkar was part of Gandhi Ji's murder conspiracy, no one can deny this."
Also, attacking the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Baghel said that the BJP leaders do not raise slogans against Godse as they themselves abide by his ideology. The contentious statement came as a follow up to Baghel's earlier remark that he would accept that BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) value Mahatma Gandhi only if they started to raise 'Godse Murdabad' slogans.
Thereafter, aiming a shot at Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, Baghel said that he would accept that PM Modi is a true Gandhian when he takes action against those members of the RSS and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) who keep Godse's idols in their homes.
