On Wednesday, the Supreme Court will hear a plea that is seeking the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate into the Palghar mob-lynching incident that happened last year, ANI reports.
The Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra state government informed the apex court that the delinquent police officials have been punished or even suspended from their services.
The pleas also seek registration of FIR against the officers for having failed to restrict the mob from assembling and thereby violating the prevalent lockdown norms at that point in time.
“Several video clippings have emerged on social media and news reports which very clearly demonstrate the active involvement of the police present, who can be seen handing over the three persons to the unlawful assembly of persons gathered,” the plea mentioned.
Meanwhile, a bench of Justices RS Reddy and Ashok Bhushan has asked the Maharashtra Police to place on record the second supplementary charge sheet that has been filed in this case. They have also posted this matter for further hearing thereafter.
Two sadhus were travelling from Kandivali to Surat in Gujarat to attend a funeral amidst the nationwide lockdown on 16th April. Subsequently, their vehicle was stopped and then attacked by a mob, all in the presence of police officials in Gadchinchile village. The sadhus breathed their last and the officers’ alleged laxity attracted immense criticism in social media.
