In a reply to the Special Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Court, businessman Mehul Choksi wrote a 34-page explanation which sought the dismissal of Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) plea to declare him a fugitive economic offender, Times of India reported.
He added that he is in correspondence with Punjab National Bank (PNB) to clear the dues that are still unsettled. He alleged that the ED has mislead the court by not placing the correspondence before it.
In his reply he also claimed that he has various health issues and that it won’t be possible for him to endure a 41 hour flight back to India.
His accusation even includes claims that the ED has on purpose undervalued many of his properties so that they will be able to attach more of them. Among those attached, the range is anywhere between Rs 89 crore to Rs 537 crore.
The court reply was submitted to special judge M S Azmi on Monday (24 December) via his advocates Sanjay Abbot and Rahul Agarwal.
The ED had earlier requested permission confiscate his properties via provisions under the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act.
