In a first, several mosques in Kerala hoisted the tricolour on the occasion of Republic Day for the first time, while also decorating the Mosque with saffron, white, and green festoons, reports Asian News International.
The development followed from the state Wakf board's decree that all the mosques in the state would hoist the national flag and read out the preamble of the Indian Constitution on the Republic Day.
The Board had sent out circulars to all the mahal committees and others concerned to not just unfurl the national flag, but also to take the pledge to protect the nation's Constitution, a copy of which was sent along with every copy of the circular.
Secretary of the Kuttiady Juma Masjid Committee, K Basheer claimed that as many as 10,000 mosques across the state hoisted the flag and celebrated the Republic Day.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
