In a shocking case of negligence, 12 children in a village in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra were administered with hand sanitiser drops instead of oral polio vaccine drops, reports Outlook.

The affected children were admitted to a nearby government hospital and according to a senior official their condition is now stable.

The incident took place on Sunday at Bhanbora PHC (Primary Health Centre) in Kapsi-Kopari village in Maharashtra’s Yavatmal district when over 2,000 children aged 1-5 years had gathered along with their parents for the polio vaccination programme under the National Immunization Drive.

According to the report, the incident came to light after one of the children complained of vomiting and uneasiness creating panic among parents and health officials.

Three officials including a health worker, doctor, and ASHA worker will be suspended in connection with the case, informed Yavatmal Zilla Parishad CEO Shrikrishna Panchal.

"An inquiry is underway and orders will be issued to suspend all the three healthcare workers," Panchal said.

The parents in the area are under fear and have demanded action against the persons responsible for this tragic lapse.
