The Eastern Railways has introduced new disposable pillow covers on the two Rajdhanis connecting Kolkata and New Delhi. This is part of a trial run by the Railways as they also look at providing disposable napkins to passengers in lieu of the hand towels currently handed out to passengers in AC coaches. These measures of the railways are a part of their effort to improve passenger amenities and hygiene on trains.
It may be noted that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) had flagged the unhygienic conditions of blankets given to passengers and observed that the same were being washed only once in six months. Subsequent to the CAG’s observations, the railways decided to wash the blankets twice in a month and also changed the material of the blankets to make it more friendly for washing.
The move to trial disposable pillow covers and napkins is part of a larger effort by the railways to provide better amenities to passengers which also include the installation of bio-toilets in coaches.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
